Manchester United ‘to reject Arsenal summer transfer bid for Chris Smalling’
Arsenal’s attempts to land Manchester United defender Chris Smalling
for £12million this summer appear dead in the water, with Louis van Gaal
ready to reject the offer.Gunners boss Arsene Wenger reportedly tried to sign the 25-year-old last summer but United’s Dutch boss rebuffed the initial offer and, according to the Manchester Evening News, Van Gaal will not sell the centre-half.
United’s defence has shown improvement in recent weeks and Smalling has been a key component. Van Gaal’s side have the third best defence in the Premier League, only Chelsea and Southampton have conceded fewer goals.
Arsenal are in the market for defensive reinforcements, with Per Mertesacker likely to leave the club but will have to turn their attentions to other targets as Smalling looks to be staying at Old Trafford.
